Yaakunte is the ancestral Cushitic language of the Yaaku (Yiaku) people of the Mukogodo Forest in Laikipia, Kenya. Almost the entire community now speaks Maa, and only a few elders retain fluent Yaakunte, making it one of the most critically endangered languages in East Africa.

History and language shift

The Yaaku were forest hunter-gatherers and beekeepers of the Mukogodo escarpment, speaking an East Cushitic language recorded in the scholarly literature as Yaaku or Mukogodo. Through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the community was progressively drawn into Maa-speaking pastoralist society through livestock, marriage and social pressure. A widely reported community decision in the 1930s to adopt Maasai livestock culture accelerated the shift, and intergenerational transmission of Yaakunte collapsed within two generations. Today virtually all ethnic Yaaku speak Maa as a first language. The principal linguistic documentation remains Bernd Heine's fieldwork, Notes on the Yaaku Language (Kenya), published in Afrika und Uebersee 58 (1974/75). Almost every Yaakunte word list circulating today, including the Rosetta Project Swadesh list and the RefLex database, ultimately derives from that corpus.

Revitalization

The Yiaku Laikipiak Trust, founded in 2000 and registered as a community trust in 2009, links Mukogodo Forest conservation, indigenous land rights and language revival, and publishes community word lists covering greetings, numbers, family terms, body parts and animals. A 2019 Leiden University MA thesis, A Revival Plan for Yaaku, reworked Heine's data into a pedagogic grammar for community teaching. Since 2024 community-led initiatives have combined tree planting in the Mukogodo Forest with vocabulary relearning, and app-assisted teaching has been reported in the Kenyan press. This archive exists to widen that record. Every word contributed here is reviewed by editors and published as an openly readable Yaakunte to English entry.
